Terroir
Natural factors
- Relief: an extension of the Las Cañadas caldera toward the coast, with deposits of whitish pumice alternating with basaltic lava flows (Series III and IV).
- Two altitudinal soil strata: medianías (400–800 m) with porous, hygroscopic volcanic soils; upper zone (800–1,700 m) with clay soils cushioned by jable. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- Leeward slope: the trade wind loses moisture as it crosses the ridge, dispersing the sea of clouds and generating pronounced aridity, high sun exposure, and a warm, dry-summer climate.
- Rainfall is very low and decreases toward the coast; only above 1,000 m are adequate amounts recorded; mean temperatures exceed 22 °C.
Human factors
- Vine cultivation dates to 1497, and by around 1550 Canarian wines were already being exported to Europe, Africa, and the Americas.
- The vine is grown in bush-trained form at high elevations (up to 1,700 m), a system described as 'exceptional throughout the Canarian vineyard.'
Product characteristics
- White wines display aromas of almond blossom, acacia, lychee, and tropical nuances (banana, mango, passion fruit, guava), with balanced acidity despite the warm climate.
- All wines show a marked mineral character, described as 'volcanic,' with an infinite range of aromatic nuances.
Terroir / wine link
- The porous volcanic soils of the medianías (400–800 m) and the influence of dry trade winds yield wines with a pronounced mineral character described as 'volcanic.'
