Terroir
Natural factors
- Zone of 33 communes between the Rhône (west), the Durance (east), and the Crau plain (south), centred on Saint-Rémy-de-Provence.
- Highly stony, free-draining calcareous soils derived from alluvial fan debris and ancient alluvial deposits of the Rhône and Durance rivers.
- Mediterranean climate with more than 2,800 hours of sunshine per year and rainfall concentrated over 70 to 80 days, mainly in autumn.
- The Mistral (north/north-westerly) strikes both slopes, generating around 100 days of strong wind and only 83 days of light or calm conditions.
- A zonal IGP in the northern Bouches-du-Rhône, formerly known as 'vin de pays de la Petite Crau' and then 'vin de pays des Alpilles' until 2009. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
