Terroir
Natural factors
- South/south-east-facing slope of a sub-Vosges foothill, exposed from east to south-west, with a steep gradient.
- Soils of very dense marls over a limestone bedrock, well drained, ensuring a balanced water supply to the vines.
- The Massif des Vosges shields the vineyard from the cool, moisture-laden winds of the north-west.
- An appellation characterised by a homogeneous geo-pedological unit combined with a favourable mesoclimate.
- A delimited zone nestled at the heart of the Alsace vineyard, within the AOC « Alsace ».
Human factors
- AOC recognised in 1992, with four authorised white varieties: riesling, gewurztraminer, pinot gris, and sylvaner.
- Hand-harvesting is mandatory; vendanges tardives and sélection de grains nobles require a minimum of 18 months' ageing.
Product characteristics
- Dry wines are mineral or aromatic/fruity/full-bodied with a golden-yellow robe; VT (exotic aromas, candied fruits) and SGN (fruit paste) through to amber yellow.
- Long ageing potential: dry wines gain complexity over time; VT/SGN are described as 'sweet wines of very long keeping ability' with 'remarkable concentration'.
Terroir / wine link
- The dense marls yield powerful, rich wines with an elegant salinity and great aromatic finesse.
