Terroir
Natural factors
- South/south-east facing slope of a sub-Vosges hill, exposed from east to south-west, with a steep gradient
- Soils of very dense marls over a limestone bedrock, well-drained, ensuring a balanced water supply to the vines
- The Massif des Vosges shields the vineyard from cool, moisture-laden winds from the north-west
- A homogeneous geo-pedological unit combined with a favourable mesoclimate, both characteristic of the appellation
Human factors
- AOC recognised in 1992; permitted grape varieties: riesling, gewurztraminer, pinot gris and sylvaner, each vinified under its own varietal designation
Product characteristics
- Dry white wines: mineral or aromatic/fruity/full-bodied, colour intensity ranging up to golden yellow; VT: exotic aromas and candied fruit; SGN: fruit-paste aromas, colour deepening to amber-yellow
- Age-worthy wines: tartaric acidity dominant, great length on the palate, gaining complexity with time; VT and SGN: exceptionally long-lived with outstanding aromatic persistence
Terroir / wine link
- Dense marls → full-bodied, rich wines with elegant salinity and great aromatic finesse
