Terroir
Natural factors
- South/south-east-facing slope of a sub-Vosges foothill, exposed from east to south-west, with a steep gradient.
- Soils: very dense marls over a limestone bedrock, well drained, providing a well-balanced water supply to the vines.
- Climatic protection afforded by the Vosges massif against cool, humid north-westerly winds.
- A homogeneous geo-pedological unit combined with a favourable mesoclimate, both characteristic of the appellation.
Human factors
- Manual harvesting is mandatory; Vendanges Tardives (VT) and Sélection de Grains Nobles (SGN) require a minimum of 18 months' ageing. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Product characteristics
- Age-worthy white wines: predominantly tartaric acidity, great body, complexity and aromatic power that develop over time.
- VT: exotic aromas and candied fruit, with colour ranging up to amber-yellow; SGN: more concentrated, with fruit-paste aromas and excellent ageing potential.
Terroir / wine link
- The dense marls yield full-bodied, richly structured wines with an elegant salinity and great aromatic finesse.
