Terroir
Natural factors
- Plain soils with a predominantly silty-sandy texture, featuring low ridges, terraces, and escarpments with elevation changes of just a few meters.
- Alluvial deposits distinguished by color: brownish-red silty deposits of Lessini origin versus light brown-hazelnut silty deposits of Adige origin.
- In the Vicenza area, the Frassine river deposited red alluvium derived from marly dolomites, basalts, porfido, and gypsiferous limestones over a Quaternary glacial substrate of Adige-Sarca origin.
- Continental climate: very hot summers (peaking in July–August), cold and foggy winters, high annual thermal range, and moderate but well-distributed rainfall.
- Predominantly flat relief to the southwest (alluvial plain); a hilly zone to the east featuring the Motta ridge (San Bonifacio) and part of the Colli Berici.
Human factors
- DOC status granted in 2000, linked to the Battle of Arcole (November 1796) between French and Austrian forces; the bridge over the Alpone was chosen as the symbol of the appellation.
- Viticulture documented over 2,000 years ago, expanded along Roman roads (the Adige and Porcilana routes) and further developed during the Middle Ages by the abbeys of San Pietro di Villanova and Lepia.
Product characteristics
- White wines from sandy soils: straw-yellow with greenish highlights, elegant and delicate aromas, a lean and sapid body, never excessively fruity. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
