Terroir
Natural factors
- Appellation restricted to the single commune of Auxey-Duresses, in a valley of the arrière-côte at elevations between 260 m and 360 m. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- At the valley mouth, very stony soils over Callovian platy limestones, distinct from the dominant Oxfordian marls.
- Cool oceanic climate (mean 10.5 °C, ~730 mm/year), tempered by continental influences; the Côte benefits from thermal shelter and a rainfall deficit. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Human factors
- Pinot noir (75% of plantings) is dominant; chardonnay is established preferentially on the right bank, well suited to the marly substrate.
- On steep slopes, planting density is reduced to 3,300 vines/ha and the lyre-trained system is used to combat erosion; minimum ageing of 8 months.
Product characteristics
- Reds: a measured, velvety tannic structure with ripe fruit character; the 1ers crus are more tannic and deeply coloured, with a touch of acidity.
- Lively, appetising whites with excellent ageing potential; aromas of fresh almond, reinette apple, and flint.
Terroir / wine link
- The 1er cru (pinot noir) extends the zones of Monthélie and Volnay, closely resembling both in viticultural character and wine style.
