Terroir
Natural factors
- The bedrock is bazalt; above it lie sand and clay-fraction layers deposited by the Pannonian Sea, on which barna erdőtalaj has developed.
- Flat-topped witness hills capped with bazalt (Badacsony, Csobánc, Szent György-hegy, Szigliget) define the relief and soils of the borvidék.
- Climate: continental base with sub-Mediterranean character; 640 mm rainfall, average temperature 11.2 °C, 1,934 sunshine hours per year.
- The water surface of Lake Balaton warms the hillsides evenly in spring, while winds from the Bakony Hills provide cool evenings during autumn ripening.
- Potassium, magnesium, calcium and trace elements released from the bazalt impart a mineral, lightly saline flavour note to the wines; the sandy-clay subsoil yields rounded acids.
Human factors
- Olaszrizling and Szürkebarát became established after phylloxera; following the political transition, Kéknyelű and Budai were revived.
- 'Badacsonyi szőlőhegy' white wines may be bottled after nine months of ageing, with a maximum yield of 80 hl/ha.
Product characteristics
- The acids are rounded, glycerol contributes a sweetish sensation, and the bazalt subsoil imparts a lightly saline and faintly bitter flavour note.
- Despite a complex aromatic structure, mid-range aromatic intensity prevails; in Szőlőhegy white wines, secondary and tertiary ageing aromas also emerge.
