Terroir
Natural factors
- Mészkő bedrock combined with volcanic rocks imparts the mineral character across the approximately 50 km belt stretching from Rezi to Köveskál.
- The kontinentális klíma is jointly tempered by cold air descending from the Bakony hills and the thermal mass of Lake Balaton.
- Sunshine: 1,950–2,000 hours per year; mean annual temperature 11–12 °C; annual precipitation 650 mm (growing season: 420 mm).
- Long, sunny autumn days secured by the Mediterranean anticyclone, combined with cool Bakony evenings, drive rapid sugar accumulation.
- Deep soils with high water-holding capacity ensure stress-free water supply to the vines during the critical summer period.
Human factors
- More than 2,200 years of uninterrupted vine cultivation: Celts, Romans, then royal and ecclesiastical estates; wines were exported as far as Tyrol in the Middle Ages.
- The variety profile characteristic to this day took shape after phylloxera: Juhfark, Olasz Rizling, Szürkebarát; some six decades of research added varieties such as Cserszegi Fűszeres.
Product characteristics
- Mineral palate with an almond finish, a ripe and complex acid structure, and an absence of vegetal aromatic compounds.
- Pezsgő and Gyöngyözőbor: characterised by harmonious acidity, complex fruitiness, and freshness.
Terroir / wine link
- Mészkő bedrock underpins minerality, an elevated magnesium content, and an above-average sugar-free extract level in the wine.
