Terroir
Natural factors
- The moderating effect of Lake Balaton: cooler summers and milder winters; mean annual temperature 9–11 °C, ~1,900 sunshine hours, 650 mm precipitation.
- The Bakony mountain range protects the vineyards from cold north-westerly winds; cool evening breezes descending from the Bakony help suppress fungal diseases.
- Characteristic soil: Rhamann-type clay-illuviated barna erdőtalaj – retains winter and spring rainfall effectively, ensuring a consistent water supply.
- Vineyards are sited on south-, south-east-, and south-west-facing dűlők; the reflective surface of Lake Balaton further intensifies light exposure.
- A distinctive sub-Mediterranean–continental climate; Mediterranean anticyclones provide a long, sunny autumn that benefits late-ripening varieties.
Human factors
- Autochthonous varieties: Bakator, Juhfark, Kéknyelű, and Pintes – belonging to the Pontic variety group – underpinned the borvidék's reputation until the arrival of phylloxera.
- 1904: at the founding of the Balatoni Szövetség, several borvidéks were founding members, signalling the role of viticulture in regional tourism.
Product characteristics
- White wines: freshness, ripe acid structure, full body, and aromatic depth; red and rosé wines: silky, elegant tannins.
- Fruity character and rounded acidity; vegetal or musty aromas and raw, green acids are absent.
Terroir / wine link
- The water mass of Lake Balaton cools and humidifies the vineyards: vegetal or musty aromas and unripe, raw acidity do not appear in the wines.
