Natural factors
- Hilly system between 150 and 400 m elevation, temperate-warm climate with approximately 1,800 degree-days and annual rainfall of approximately 700 mm.
- Predominantly calcareous soils of medium depth, on calcareous-arenaceous-marly bedrock matrices, at the center of the Piemonte Tertiary basin.
- Certain areas of paleosoils or terra rossa with acidic reaction (Cassine, Mantovana, Quargnento, Masio), excluded from the Barbera d'Asti production regulations.
Human factors
- Guyot training is dominant, chosen for its adaptability to the vine-climate interactions of the zone's hilly terrain.
Terroir / wine link
- Calcareous soils on calcareous-arenaceous-marly matrices, with small areas of paleosoils (acidic terra rossa) at Cassine, Quargnento, and Masio, absent from the Barbera d'Asti regulations.
