Terroir
Natural factors
- The geological core consists of 'macigno': graded quartz-feldspar arenarie of Oligocene age, forming the base of the Montalbano ridge.
- The NE-facing slope is covered by scagliose argille: argillosi scisti with embedded blocks of calcari, arenarie, and ophiolitic breccias within the chaotic complex.
- The vineyard slopes rarely exceed 300 m a.s.l., favouring a long growing season, heat accumulation, and full ripening of the grapes.
Human factors
- The name 'Barco Reale' derives from a Medici hunting estate of the 16th century; Carmignano is the first wine zone in the world (1716) to have established restrictive regulations to guarantee the purity of its wine. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
