Terroir
Natural factors
- The area forms a low karst plateau with Jurassic limestones, dolomites, and Cretaceous limestones, in places overlain by Pleistocene ilovica.
- Vineyards lie between 210 and 390 m a.s.l., predominantly on the southern slopes of the Gorjanci hills and the eastern slopes of the Roška planota.
- The karst relief creates great heterogeneity of gradients and aspects, generating highly diverse microclimatic conditions among individual lege.
- The sum of effective temperatures during the growing season ranges from 1,245.7 °C (Dobliče) to 1,329.0 °C (Metlika), with estimates of 1,480–1,545 °C on the most favourable lege.
- Tertiary marls appear along the far eastern margin beneath the Gorjanci; isolated limestone blocks are common throughout the vineyards.
Human factors
- The varietal composition of Belokranjec combines Laški rizling, Kraljevina, Pinot Blanc, Chardonnay, and others, yielding a harmonious aromatic profile.
- On 30 August 1999, the municipalities of Metlika, Semič, and Črnomelj together with KZ Metlika signed an agreement defining the varietal composition and organoleptic characteristics of Belokranjec. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Product characteristics
- A dry, still white wine of yellowish colour with greenish hues; fresh on the palate in its first year, developing aromas of a more mature wine thereafter.
- Distinctive varietal aromas (yellow muscat, Sauvignon) must not dominate; freshness and drinkability are the shared hallmarks of all wines. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Terroir / wine link
