Terroir
Natural factors
- In the Rimini area, moderately evolved soils belonging to the Argille Azzurre formation predominate.
- Between the Faenza and Forlì areas, the Spungone formation (a local bioclastic carbonate rock) is also present.
- A strip of alluvial plain with clay-loam-silt or sandy-loam soils, in the provinces of Bologna and Ravenna.
Human factors
- Albana was traditionally cultivated blended with other grape varieties to produce white wines, sometimes sparkling, born from re-fermentation in bottle with corks secured by crossed string.
- The staggered ripening of Albana made it possible to obtain dry wines from early-harvested grapes and wines with residual sugar from late-harvested ones, which were then re-fermented in spring.
