Terroir
Natural factors
- Vineyards are established on Tertiary rocks: quartz sands, sandstones with calcareous cement, marls, and Leitha limestone.
- In some areas vineyards extend onto Triassic limestones and dolomites, with the limestones containing a relatively high proportion of chert.
- Lithological diversity: each parent rock gives rise to at least three soil forms, which are transformed into vineyard soils by deep ripping (rigolanje), resulting in qualitative diversity among the wines.
- The sum of effective temperatures during the growing season ranges from 1,197.3 °C (Bizeljsko) to 1,278.9 °C (Sremič), estimated up to 1,465 °C on exposed sites.
Product characteristics
- Red Bizeljčan: light ruby colour with violet hues, fruity nose, freshness on the palate, and a gentle tannic structure.
- White Bizeljčan: pale yellow colour with greenish hues, pronounced fruity aroma, freshness, and easy drinkability on the palate.
