Terroir
Natural factors
- 494 of the 535 communes of the Gironde — the largest AOC wine-producing territory in France — with approximately 9,000 ha under red varieties
- Thermal regulation provided by the Atlantic Ocean, the Gironde estuary, and the valleys of the Garonne and the Dordogne
- Annual rainfall of 700–800 mm, well distributed throughout the year; an unpredictable climate that gives rise to a pronounced vintage effect
- Well-drained, warm fluvial gravel terraces suited to the vine; clay-rich 'palus' soils in more recent alluvial zones
Human factors
- The AOC Bordeaux Supérieur, recognised in 1943, rewards farming practices that encourage grape concentration and longer élevage
Product characteristics
- Reds: aromas of fresh and candied red fruits when young, evolving toward spice notes and cooked fruit with extended élevage
Terroir / wine link
- Gravelly soils — gravel, rounded quartz, and sand — form well-drained, warm terraces particularly suited to Cabernet Sauvignon N
