Natural factors
- Two geological families: Paleozoic granites and schists in the north (acidic soils); Triassic–Jurassic limestones in the south (deep, clay-rich soils).
- Geographical zone: 85 communes in Rhône and 11 in Saône-et-Loire, ranging from 180 m to 550 m in altitude, spanning 55 km north–south and 15–20 km east–west.
- East- and south-facing slopes; Quaternary formations (fluvial terraces, colluvium) mask the older bedrock at the foot of the slopes.
