Terroir
Natural factors
- Soils outside the lowlands are mostly sandy, partly gravelly; glacial till is either thin or absent altogether.
- The landscape is shaped by glacial features: ground and terminal moraines, outwash plains, glacial meltwater valleys, glacial channels, and lakes.
- A noticeable kontinentaler Einfluss, especially in Lusatia; annual rainfall only 520–620 mm.
- Sunshine hours reach 1,600–1,800 per year; the Lower Lusatia region ranks among the sunniest areas in Germany.
- Viticulture today is practised predominantly on south-facing, gently to moderately sloping sites.
Human factors
- Scattered-vineyard cultivation on climatically favoured hillside sites, historically associated with secular and ecclesiastical estates.
- Many growing sites were already recorded as vineyard land on historical maps from the 17th and 18th centuries.
Product characteristics
- The wines reflect aromas of regional fruit varieties such as apple, peach, sour cherry, and soft berries.
- Low-nutrient soils in combination with low rainfall and high sunshine hours produce wines of distinctive character.
Terroir / wine link
- Low-nutrient sandy soils combined with high sunshine hours and low rainfall produce, according to the specification, characteristically distinctive and unique wines.
