Natural factors
- Geological origin of the granite-metamorphic core dating to the Paleozoic, the era in which the Sardinian-Corsican plate was formed.
- Mesozoic carbonate-dolomitic strata outcrop as rugged relief in the Sulcis and in central-eastern Sardegna.
- On the Oligo-Miocene marly-arenaceous hills, typical toposequences form a catena: Entisols–Inceptisols–Vertisols.
Human factors
- The geological zone of the DOC has its origins in the Paleozoic, with a Sardinian-Corsican granite-metamorphic core, subsequently enriched by Mesozoic marine deposits, Tertiary volcanism, and Quaternary alluvial deposits.
- Soils range from Entisols and Inceptisols on the uplands to Vertisols and Alfisols in the plains, with a dominant xeric moisture regime and the presence of petrocalcic horizons.
Terroir / wine link
- DOC Cagliari soils: from Oligo-Miocene marly-arenaceous hills with Entisol-Inceptisol-Vertisol toposequences to Quaternary alluvial deposits with Alfisols and petrocalcic horizons.
