Natural factors
- Eocene-dominant soils: compact sandstone (macigno), scisti galestrini, compact limestones and marne (alberese) in the hillside zones.
- Annual rainfall ~1,200 mm (1961–1990 data, Massa weather station), markedly above the Toscana average; 550 mm during the vegetative cycle from April to October.
- Vineyards on the hills at the foot of the Alpi Apuane, south-facing toward the sea; the water promotes additional reflected light.
- The high drainage capacity of the soils (with drainage works in the argille zones) counterbalances excessive rainfall, promoting freshness in the white wines.
Human factors
- Vineyards on terraces with irregular row spacing, density >10,000 vines/ha, trained to single or multiple guyot, with no mechanization possible.
Product characteristics
- The high rainfall (550 mm during the vegetative cycle) lends freshness to the whites, though the reds tend to be slightly less structured.
Terroir / wine link
- The abundant rainfall (1,200 mm/year) is offset by the high drainage capacity of the soils, promoting freshness in the whites at the expense of structure in the reds.
