Cerasuolo d'Abruzzo
Styles
Principal grape varieties
Terroir
Natural factors
- Intermontane basins on ancient fluvio-alluvial terraces: low-gradient detrital deposits, loose soils.
Human factors
- Autonomous DOC since 2010: previously a style within Montepulciano d'Abruzzo, differing only in winemaking practices (white vinification or brief maceration).
Product characteristics
- Cherry-pink colour, intense fruity aromas, dry and fresh on the palate with an almond-tinged finish; in the Superiore style the aromas are more evolved and complex.
- Alcohol content between 12.5 and 13.5% vol. and acidity between 5.5 and 6.5 g/l, with notes of red fruit and cherry that are difficult to replicate outside the production zone.
Terroir / wine link
- Sandy-clayey soils of marine Plio-Pleistocene origin promote a marked acidity (5.5–6.5 g/l) and the characteristic fruity profile of Cerasuolo.
