Terroir
Natural factors
- Terra rossa soils formed by the decalcification of calcareous sedimentary rocks, with free iron and aluminium oxides imparting the characteristic dark red coloration.
- Variable soil texture: heavy clay-silt terra rossa or detrital terra rossa containing calcareous fragments, derived from the erosion of the Monti Ernici.
- Vineyards on the slopes of the Monti Ernici, in the upper Sacco valley, at elevations between 220 and 980 m above sea level, with a general west to south-west aspect.
- Transitional temperate climate: annual rainfall 1,098–1,233 mm, summer drought lasting 1–2 months, mean annual temperature 13.5–15.6 °C.
Human factors
- The Statuti della Terra di Piglio (30 May 1479): the earliest written regulations governing vineyard zones, harvest timing, and wine trade.
- DOC recognition granted in 1973, subsequently elevated to DOCG in 2008 (Ministerial Decree of 1 August 2008).
Terroir / wine link
- Terra rossa soils overlying calcareous rocks of the Monti Ernici, rich in iron and aluminium oxides, yield clay-silt profiles that shape the fundamental character of the wine.
