Terroir
Natural factors
- Pliocene soils on a Paleozoic crystalline basement; three distinct zones: coastal, terraced, and conglomerate-rich inland hill zone.
- Three zones (Feudo, La Ponta, Vallo) with argillaceous-calcareous composition, absent in surrounding areas, characterizing the expression of Gaglioppo.
- Climate ranging from sub-humid to sub-arid: rainfall concentrated in autumn and winter, marked summer water deficit, peak temperatures in August.
- Territory ranging from 0 to 462 m a.s.l., sheltered to the west by the Sila massif and open to the east onto the Ionian coastline for approximately 15 km.
- Day-to-night temperature variation during ripening, combined with good air circulation, promotes phytosanitary integrity and preservation of aromatic compounds.
Human factors
- Traditional training in alberello and counter-trellis systems protects aromatic precursors from high temperatures and counteracts summer water stress.
Product characteristics
- Ruby red with aromas of red fruit and spice notes, full-bodied and velvety on the palate with aging.
- Sandy and conglomerate soils impart spiced aromatic notes; a good supply of Ca, P, and K enhances the wine's minerally sapidity.
