Terroir
Natural factors
- North–south tectonic relief separating limestone plateaux (~400–500 m) to the west from the Bresse plain (~250 m) to the east
- A single-owner monopole appellation forming one contiguous block on the commune of Morey-Saint-Denis, 7.53 ha, east-facing, enclosed by stone walls
- A surface layer of scree mixed with red clays and silts, ranging from a few decimetres to 1 m in depth, over a limestone bedrock
- Temperate oceanic climate, ~750 mm/year, mean temperature 10.5 °C, with the Morvan massif providing a climatic shelter that reduces rainfall and raises temperatures (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Human factors
- Founded in 1141 by Cistercian Bernardine nuns, the vineyard has changed hands only twice in nearly 1,000 years.
Product characteristics
- Deep colour, powerful tannins and a velvety texture; floral, fruity and spiced aromas, sometimes with notes of truffle. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- Ageing potential: drinks well over 10 to 15 years, up to 20 years in great vintages.
Terroir / wine link
- The topography protects against frost and fog, and ensures an east-facing exposure that promotes rapid warming of the soil.
