Terroir
Natural factors
- Zone limited to the single commune of Morey-Saint-Denis, Côte-d'Or, between Dijon and Nuits-Saint-Georges.
- Plots situated between 280 m and 310 m in altitude, on the lower half of the Côte's slope.
- Shallow, calcareous, well-draining soils despite a high clay content; a marly layer acts as a source of temporary water supply. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- Temperate oceanic climate with continental influences, ~750 mm/year, mean annual temperature 10.5 °C, sheltered by the Burgundian plateaux. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Human factors
- Origins dating to the 11th century: the clos belonged to the collegiate church of Saint-Denis de Vergy, chapel of a fortress in the Hautes Côtes de Nuits demolished in the 17th century.
Product characteristics
- Ruby colour; intense nose blending red fruits, dog rose, spice, and toasted almonds; supple, velvety palate.
- Notable length on the palate; a few years of ageing allows these wines to fully open out.
Terroir / wine link
- Poor soils (clayey colluvium over fractured limestone) yield elegant, distinguished, age-worthy wines that stand apart within the Côte de Nuits.
