Human factors
- Viticulture documented since the Middle Ages: by the 1300s Albana was already cited as a prestigious variety, alongside Trebbiano, Garganega, and Verdea.
- In the eighteenth century sharecropping spread the piantata system across the plains; on the hillsides, specialized viticulture persisted, with a predominance of white varieties destined for export.
Terroir / wine link
- On the slopes of the Marnoso-arenacea formation (110–430 m a.s.l.), calcareous soils of medium texture push viticulture to its maximum altitudinal limit.
