- Territory divided into 4 geological systems in decreasing age: Mio-Eocene pre-Apennine ridges, Pliocene hills, Pleistocene deposits, and alluvial deposits.
- Hillside vineyards averaging between 200 and 400 m a.s.l.; the disciplinare sets the maximum ceiling at 700 m a.s.l.
- Climate ranging from humid to sub-humid with a summer water deficit; mean annual rainfall 867 mm, minimum in July (32 mm), maximum in November (121 mm).
- August is the hottest month (average above 23 °C); January the coldest (average around 5 °C).
- The zone closely follows the geography of Chianti, spanning the provinces of Arezzo, Firenze, Pisa, Pistoia, Prato, and Siena, south of the Apennines.
