Natural factors
- Pedogenized tufi of volcanic origin, derived from the Sabatino and Vicano volcanic complexes, enrich the pedological variability of the zone.
- Massive calcare and chert outcrop in the areas bordering the Monti Sabini, together with blue-grey argille and marine marne grigie.
- Vineyard altitude ranges from 19 to 600 m a.s.l., with predominantly west- and south-facing exposures.
- Temperate climate with summer aridity (73–133 mm in June–August) and a mean annual temperature between 13.8 and 15.6 °C.
Human factors
- A donation dated 941 AD of land and vineyards to the Abbot of Farfa constitutes the earliest dated medieval attestation of viticulture in the zone.
