Terroir
Natural factors
- Soils attributable to two geological units: Pliocene–Pleistocene sedimentary formations and volcanic formations.
- Volcanic soils comprising grey leucitic tufi known as those of Montefiascone, phonolitic and leucitic tephritic lavas, lapilli, and ash; rocks rich in potassium.
- Temperate Mediterranean climate: annual rainfall 775–1,214 mm, moderate summer aridity, mean temperature 13.7–15.2°C.
Human factors
- Volcanically active terrain for approximately 800,000 years: lavas, leucitic tufi of Montefiascone, and lapilli overlying volcano-sedimentary soils.
- DOC approved in 1996; whites based on Trebbiano Toscano (40–80%), reds based on Sangiovese (50–65%) and Montepulciano (20–45%).
Terroir / wine link
- Volcanic soils rich in potassium—derived from Vulsinian and Sabatine volcanic activity—and the leucitic tufi of Montefiascone impart a mineral character to the wines of the DOC.
