Natural factors
- Four geological categories outcrop in the zone: sandy-gravelly alluvium, lacustrine argille, yellow sands with conglomerates, and arenaria-marne turbidites.
- On steep argilloso slopes, loamy-silt Entisols predominate — strongly calcareous, sub-alkaline, and low in organic matter.
- On ancient alluvial terraces, Inceptisols (Haplustepts) develop with balanced texture, low skeletal content, and low calcare.
- Vines are cultivated up to 450 m (black-grape varieties) and 500 m (white-grape varieties) above sea level; valley floors are excluded from the appellation.
- Mean annual rainfall is 897.54 mm (century-long average), rising to 937.1 mm over the last decade due to increased winter precipitation.
Human factors

- Vineyards on valley floors are excluded; the upper altitude limit is 450 m for black-grape varieties and 500 m for white-grape varieties.
