Natural factors
- Hillside substrates composed of argillaceous turbidites, with fine-loamy soils and neutral-to-alkaline reaction.
- To a lesser extent, calcareous-marly turbidites with fine-loamy soils and neutral-to-subalkaline reaction.
- Vineyards between 0 and 1,200 m a.s.l., predominant elevation 100–300 m, slopes of 35–50%, south-east aspect, up to 21 km from the sea.
- Climate with a mean temperature of ~14°C; Huglin index ~2,028°C, peak rainfall in April (~210 mm), minimum in July (21 mm).
- Zone in the Genoese eastern Ligurian coast, between the Ligurian Sea shoreline and the Apennine watershed, in the lower-to-middle hill zone.
Human factors
- The spread of viticulture is historically attributed to Benedictine monks, with the city of Genova as the principal commercial outlet.
- Distinctive local grape varieties: Bianchetta Genovese, Ciliegiolo, Vermentino, Moscato, and Cimixià.
