Terroir
Natural factors
- Predominantly granitic soils, with metamorphic rocks (leptynites, anatexites, gneiss) rich in quartz and micas, with a high capacity for heat retention.
- The appellation extends across 5 departments — Loire, Rhône, Isère, Drôme (northern part), and Ardèche (northern part) — following the course of the Rhône flanked by hills.
- Alluvial clayey-limestone stony soils in the valley floor, and stony outwash deposits on gentle slopes, complementing the crystalline soils.
- Highly contrasted topography: flat alluvial plains lying alongside steep slopes and small plateaus set against a backdrop of rolling hills.
