Natural factors
- Peaks of trachytic origin, the oldest geologically, with summits that can exceed 600 m a.s.l. (M. delle Grazie, M. della Frombola, M. Sassicari).
- Soils dating to the Upper Cretaceous, composed of brown argillites alternating with marly limestones and silica, among the oldest in the appellation area.
- Alluvial coastal zone with volcanic deposits: pyroclastics, black pozzolane and red pozzolane, as well as consolidated marine and lacustrine sands.
- Transitional Mediterranean climate with annual rainfall between 810 and 940 mm, summer aridity (June–August: 73–123 mm), and mean temperatures between 14.8 and 15.6°C.
Human factors
- Documented Etruscan viticulture: the Latin georgic writers cite the wine of Ceretano, praised by Martial as excellent and comparable to Setino.
- Columella and Martial both cite Cere for its wine: the «vino caeretanus» was likened to aged Setino.
