Terroir
Natural factors
- Coastal strip of 379 km, flat with inland hilly terrain between 200 and 400 m above sea level.
- Climate ranging from sub-humid dry to semi-arid along the Grosseto coast, with possible water deficit from May through August.
- The area north of Livorno, at the mouth of the Arno, gradually transitions to a humid climate with an overall moisture balance above zero.
- The orography favours intensification of rainfall when Tyrrhenian depressions channel moist air masses from the south-west.
Human factors
- The IGP coastal strip extends for 379 km, with inland hilly zones between 200 and 400 m above sea level, bounded by relief ranging from the Alpi Apuane (above 2,000 m) to Monte Amiata (1,000 m).
- The climate ranges from semi-arid along the Grosseto coast (600 mm/year) to sub-humid toward the Alpi Apuane (800–850 mm), with mean monthly temperatures between 3 and 30 °C.
Terroir / wine link
- The summer water deficit (May–August) in the Grosseto area drives the vine into controlled stress, a condition imprinted on the wine's profile.
Facts drawn from the cahier's terroir-link section (Lien au terroir) by automatic interpretation — see the source.
