Terroir
Natural factors
- A stony plateau stretching 40 km (NE–SW) by 15 km, between the Vistrenque, the Gardon/Rhône plains, and the Camargue, across 24 communes in the Gard.
- Mediterranean climate: 2,700 hours of sunshine per year, summer sub-drought conditions, and cold, dry mistral blowing down from the Rhône valley. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Human factors
- As early as 280 AD, the vineyard was massively replanted; the abbey of Saint-Gilles supplied its wines to the Avignon popes.
- AOC recognised in 1986 as 'Costières du Gard', renamed 'Costières de Nîmes' in 1989 to reflect the geological terrace.
Product characteristics
- Whites are floral and fruity (white flowers, citrus, white-fleshed fruit); rosés are lively and full, with red berry fruit and dried fruit notes.
- Reds: red fruit aromas in youth, evolving toward spice and herbal notes, medium ageing potential, elegant and structured.
Terroir / wine link
- The Villafranchian pebbles ('Gress') store daytime heat, creating a thermal differential that draws in sea breezes from the Camargue, preserving freshness and aromatic complexity. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
