Terroir
Natural factors
- Relief of cuesta landforms in the Paris Basin: slopes facing east and south, sometimes north (northern Montagne de Reims, left bank of the Marne).
- Escarpment faces in limestone or chalk; chalky, marly, or sandy slopes covered with eroded colluvial deposits.
- Dual climatic influence: oceanic (regular rainfall, low thermal contrasts) and continental (frosts, good summer sunshine). (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- Emblematic sub-zones: Montagne de Reims, vallée de la Marne, Côte des Blancs, Côte du Sézannais, Côte des Bar.
Human factors
- Highly variable production: still wines are made only when the character of the harvest is suited to their production.
Product characteristics
- Reds/rosés: transparent appearance, silky attack, red-fruit aromas; whites: crystalline, saline texture, dominant minerality and vivacity.
- Whites: minerality generates a fine length, natural acidity brings freshness; aging adds richness and contributes to overall palate balance.
Terroir / wine link
- Chalk drains excess water while ensuring rehydration by capillary action, imparting to the wine a natural acidity and mineral notes.
