Terroir
Natural factors
- Well-drained soils with limited water retention, quick to dry out and warm up, moderately fertile.
- Temperate oceanic climate; ~700 mm/year well distributed, with a marked summer water deficit; mean annual temperature ~11.5 °C. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- The Loire, oriented in line with the prevailing winds, channels maritime influence; early autumn is typically windy and dry. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Human factors
- Pinot gris, introduced from the 17th century onward, yields a sweet white wine known as 'Malvoisie'; gamay N arrived around the mid-19th century.
- As early as 1573, Charles IX authorised 4 wine-broker offices at the port of Ancenis, increased to 10 in 1584.
Product characteristics
- Reds: cherry to garnet colour, aromas of red fruits and spice, elegant tannins, supple and fresh in character. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- Whites: notes of ripe or exotic fruits, with the roundness of residual fermentable sugars balancing the freshness typical of Loire wines. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Terroir / wine link
- The poor, acidic soils of the Armorican hillsides limit the vigour of gamay N, explaining how it came to supplant the earlier dark-berried varieties.
