Terroir
Natural factors
- 49 communes in the Rhône department, ranging from 200 m (river escarpment) to 550 m (lower slopes of the Monts du Lyonnais)
- Dominant soils derived from granites and gneisses of the Massif Central: sandy or sandy-clay arènes, light-textured and of low fertility
- In the south-east, Quaternary Alpine glacial moraines overlying a granitic substrate: coarse clayey gravels, thin and leached soils
- A climatic crossroads of oceanic influences (835 mm/year, 11 °C), with southerly influences from the Rhône corridor and continental influences; mesoclimates producing up to 2 weeks' difference in ripening dates
Human factors
- After the phylloxera crisis, the appellation was reconstituted around gamay N; AOC status was granted in 1984, following an initial recognition as VDQS as early as 1952.
Product characteristics
- Reds: bright colour, fruit-forward, moderate tannins; enjoyable as primeur or after 1 to 3 years of bottle ageing.
- Whites: combining fruit, freshness and roundness; a nose evoking white peach, with a crisp, lively palate.
