Natural factors
- Vineyards set on Upper Cretaceous plateaux (110–140 m elevation), deeply incised by the Loir over 25 km of river course despite a straight-line distance of only ~12 km.
- Six tight meanders create cliffs, steep slopes (~50 m of elevation change), and a deeply cut valley floor across 27 communes.
- Parcels concentrated on slopes facing the valley or its tributaries, and on the chamfered edges of the plateau; soils with a high proportion of coarse elements.
- Degraded oceanic climate (~680 mm/year); the Loir and its perpendicular tributary valleys act as a thermal regulator. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- tuffeau cave cellars in the foothill villages, traditionally used for ageing wines.
Product characteristics
- Gris wines (pineau d'Aunis, direct pressing): pale robe with salmon highlights, generous peppery nose, light and refreshing palate.
- White wines: pale gold in colour, with honey and lime-blossom aromas; red wines: a spiced palette (pepper) and red fruit.
Terroir / wine link
- tuffeau chalk slopes: historic caves used for vinification and cellaring, revealing the aromatic potential of the late-ripening varieties chenin and pineau d'Aunis.
