Terroir
Natural factors
- Amphitheatre open to the east toward the Mediterranean, framed by the Canigou (2,780 m), the Albères (1,450 m), and the Corbières (878 m)
- All geological eras are represented; soils are shallow, very dry, low in organic matter, very stony, and well drained
- Sunshine exceeding 2,500 hours per year, rainfall of 500–650 mm with a stormy character, distributed across spring and autumn; upper altitude limit at 300 m or the 13 °C isotherm
- The Tramontane blows one day in three: a very cold north-westerly wind in winter after passing over the snow-covered peaks of the Pyrenees
- Three rivers and streams, often dry, cross the vineyard area from west to east, forming terraces and alluvial fan deposits originating from the massifs
