Terroir
Natural factors
- A cuesta extending the Côtes de Meuse northward, stretching 20 km west of Toul, its eastern escarpment overlooking a cereal plain. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- 8 communes in Meurthe-et-Moselle; claimed vineyard area of 75 ha in 2023 (of which 37.5 ha gris, 20.5 ha white, 17 ha red).
Human factors
- As early as 1355, Lorraine ordinances codified viticulture: prescribed training methods, interplanted crops banned in 1666, and 'cantons à vigne' formally delineated.
- Since 1991, collective research into the vinification of vin gris has led to the reintroduction of Pinot Noir N as a second principal variety.
Product characteristics
- Vin gris: bright salmon-coloured appearance, dry, light, and lively, with a nose of fresh fruit and a moreish palate — the unique worldwide technique of free-run drainage or immediate pressing applied to Gamay.
- White Auxerrois: citrus nose, floral, broad and lingering palate; red Pinot Noir: finely tannic, full-bodied, round and elegant. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Terroir / wine link
- Clay-limestone soils → freshness and floral/fruity notes in the gris and whites; good phenolic ripeness → tannic structure in the reds.
