Terroir
Natural factors
- Flat lowland setting, altitude below 100 m above sea level; the Tisza, Körös, and Maros rivers define the growing area.
- Principal soil type: alluvial cover sand; smaller proportions of barna erdőtalaj, csernozjom, and meadow soil.
- Sandy soil warms rapidly, reflects solar radiation, and is phylloxera-immune owing to its quartz content.
- Kontinentális klíma, occasionally with mediterrán hatás; 2,200 sunshine hours per year — the highest figure in Hungary.
- Annual precipitation 450–500 mm; the oxbow lakes and tributaries of the Tisza provide optimal humidity conditions.
Human factors
- The phylloxera epidemic (from 1875) left the borvidék almost untouched due to the immunity of its sandy soils; Hungary's oldest bush-vine plantings survive here. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
- Traditional varieties: Kadarka, Kékfrankos, Kövidinka; reductive winemaking is increasingly adopted for white and rosé wines.
Product characteristics
- Whites and rosés: intensely aromatic, flavour-rich, lower alcohol, soft character; reds: deep colour, firm tannins.
- The interplay of sandy and alluvial soils yields light, moderately acidic wines with a restrained sense of minerality.
