Terroir
Natural factors
- Dominant soils are clayey or clay-loam, grey or dark grey, deep ≥1 m, overlying beds of marly or blue clay.
- Most widespread pedological type: soils derived from compact Mesozoic limestones, dominant on the Gargano and in the BAT province.
- Hot, dry Mediterranean climate: mild winters, long warm summers, August the hottest month, January the coldest.
- Morphology: Apennine Daunian mountain rim to the NW, the broad flat Tavoliere plain, the Murge plateau, and the slopes of the Gargano.
- The 'Puglia Piana' (Tavoliere–Barletta–Trinitapoli) records strong diurnal temperature ranges due to the interplay of climatic and orographic factors.
Human factors
- In 1850 the Pavoncelli and La Rochefocauld families planted approximately 60 ha of Nero di Troia trained as low alberello; within a few years the area under vine reached 2,500 ha.
- The IGT Daunia zone coincides with the territory of the ancient Dauni, peoples of Illyrian origin who settled in northern Puglia in the 8th century BC.
Terroir / wine link
- Grey or dark grey clay-loam soils (≥1 m deep) overlying beds of marly or blue clay confer high water-holding capacity to the vineyard.
