Terroir
Natural factors
- Fluvial valley floor at ~720 m elevation, flanked by calcareous-marly páramos at 800–840 m to the north and south.
- Fluvial depositional terrace with sands (~78%), pebbles, and gravels over a marly-calcareous substratum; free-draining soil, poor in nutrients.
- The Duero river borders the zone to the north; a Scots pine forest encircles the southern and western perimeter, with both features acting as climatic barriers.
- Microclimate averaging 12 °C annually (~0.5 °C warmer than the surrounding area) and 206 frost-free days (the surrounding area records fewer than 200).
Human factors
- In 1751, the township of Peñalba de Duero recorded 650 obradas of vineyard in the Dehesa, documenting historic viticulture in the area.
- From 1995 onward, the vineyard was replanted with medium-to-long cycle varieties and a winery equipped with advanced oenological technology was constructed.
Product characteristics
- Reds of intense, stable blue-red colour, with aromas of ripe red and black fruit, medium-to-full body, and sweet, long-lived tannins.
- High concentration of monomeric anthocyanins (< 223 mg/l) confers greater chromatic stability and superior ageing potential compared to Ribera del Duero.
Terroir / wine link
- The sandy-gravelly soil promotes skin pigmentation: the wines display higher anthocyanin concentration and a stable blue-red colour.
