Terroir
Natural factors
- The sand is of fluvial origin: deposited between the Danube and the Tisza by the Duna's millennia-long east–west migration.
- Flat terrain: mostly below 150 m above sea level, with elevation differences of no more than 10–15 m.
- The phylloxera immunity of sandy soils saved viticulture and played a decisive role in stabilising the loose sand.
Human factors
- The phylloxera epidemic left the sandy areas untouched, greatly increasing their importance.
- The proportion of indigenous and new Hungarian varieties is highest here (>60%): Bianca, Kövidinka, Cserszegi Fűszeres.
Product characteristics
- White and rosé wines are intensely aromatic and flavour-rich; Siller and red wines show a fruity, lighter, less deeply coloured character.
- The wines develop quickly, are light-bodied, and softer due to lower acidity; their mineral content is low as a result of the sandy soils.
Terroir / wine link
- Sandy soils → low mineral content in the wine, rapid development, soft acidity, and a light body.
