Terroir
Natural factors
- Soil: brown forest soil (barna erdőtalaj) formed on riolittufa (compacted, csernozjom, clay-banded, and eroded variants), with the exception of the alluvial sand deposits of the Debrő sediment plain.
- Nagy-Eged features marine limestone-derived barna erdőtalaj, while Mész-hegy is andezit-based — two geologically distinct islands within the surrounding riolittufa.
- Climate: mean annual temperature 10.65 °C, precipitation 592.6 mm, sunshine 1,964 hours (47-year average).
Human factors
- The name Egri Bikavér appeared in print for the first time in 1851: "Bikavér — this is what the strong red wine is called, for example the one from Eger."
- The EGER appellation of origin was registered on 15 September 1970 under the Lisbon Agreement.
Product characteristics
- Egri red wines: restrained tannins, lively acidity, pronounced fruit and spice aromas, long finish, well-suited to extended ageing.
- White wines: rich aromatic profile, pronounced minerality, naturally higher acidity than wines from more southerly borvidéks.
Terroir / wine link
- Volcanic soil → more mineral-driven wine; deep clay soil → fuller-bodied wine; Debrő sand → more fiery, spirited wine.
