Terroir
Natural factors
- Predominantly brown calcareous soils, with occurrences of argillaceous regosols and red Mediterranean soils.
- Hot-arid Mediterranean climate: mean temperature 17.6 °C, among the highest in Sicilia, with peak maxima in July–August.
- Very low mean annual rainfall: 300–400 mm, with scarce summer precipitation and irrigation prohibited in the vineyard.
- Predominantly flat and gentle hill terrain, between 0 and 300 m a.s.l., in the extreme south-eastern tip of Sicilia.
Human factors
- The denomination takes its name from a Greco-Corinthian city founded in the 7th century BC at the mouth of the river Tellaro; Pachino (1760) derives from the Greek «pachis» (abundant) + «oinos» (wine).
