Terroir
Natural factors
- Ischia is entirely volcanic in origin, formed over ~150,000 years of successive eruptions.
- Monte Epomeo (788 m), the island's core, is a sunken submarine volcano; its soils are characterised by green tufo.
- The vineyards rise on dry-stone terraces built with green tufo walls, from the coastline up to the steep mountain slopes.
- Prevailing winds: libeccio and ponente-libeccio and scirocco in winter; tramontana and grecale in summer and spring.
Human factors
- The Coppa di Nestore (725 BC), found at Lacco Ameno, is the earliest known Greek written record to mention local wine, attesting to the introduction of viticulture by Euboean settlers.
- From the 1500s, bulk white wine was exported by sea in 'carrati' casks carried aboard vinacciere (sailing vessels) as far as Dalmatia.
Terroir / wine link
- The green tufo volcanic soil of Monte Epomeo, unique in the Tyrrhenian Sea, is identified as the foundation of the conditions favourable to high-quality viticulture.
