- Atlantic-facing slopes: rainfall of 1,200 to over 2,000 mm per year, temperate humid climate with no dry season.
- Two climatic sub-regions: the Atlantic-facing slopes (mesothermal) and the middle zone (sub-Atlantic, transitioning toward Mediterranean).
- The delimited area is bounded to the west by the Atlantic, to the north by the Landes, to the south by the Rioja, and to the east by Navarre and the Béarn.
- The mountainous and rugged relief encouraged valley isolation and the emergence of 159 apple varieties with unique DNA.
