Natural factors
- Côte de Nuits: a rectilinear north–south ridge of tectonic origin, approximately 25 km long with a slope differential of around 150 m.
- The escarpment face is structured around Comblanchien limestone (Middle Jurassic); Liassic marls outcrop at the lower slope.
- Shallow, well-draining carbonated soils; a topo-sequence running from the upper slope (thin, highly calcareous) to the lower slope (clay-rich, decarbonated at the surface).
- Cool oceanic climate (mean 10.5 °C, ~750 mm/year), sheltered by the Morvan massif, which provides a thermal advantage and a rainfall deficit.
- The appellation area is confined to the communes of Fixin and Brochon (Côte-d'Or); combes are excluded as too narrow and deeply incised. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Human factors
- Clos de la Perrière: a former property of Cîteaux Abbey, documented as early as 1177, encompassing a quarry and a manor house.
- Planting density above 9,000 vines/ha; grape varieties pinot noir N and chardonnay B; aged for several months.
Product characteristics
- Reds are deeply coloured, powerful, and tannic, with aromas of red and black berries, animal notes, and musk; wines with significant ageing potential.
- Whites are well-balanced on the palate, with exotic fruit evolving toward minerality; pale gold in appearance with green highlights. (via Wikipedia · CC BY-SA 4.0)
Terroir / wine link
- On well-draining calcareous soils the wines are elegant; on Liassic marls at the foot of the slope, the wines are fuller-bodied.
